10 ways to bust through a weight-loss plateau

One of the most frustrating things I see people struggle with is when they hit that dreaded weight-loss plateau. It happens to everyone. You start a new plan, you lose a few pounds, you're super-stoked, and then a few weeks or months into it you stop losing weight. What's going on? 5 ways to stop the snack monster!

  I would bet money that snacking is one of the top reasons you're not hitting your nutrition or weight loss goals. Here are some reasons why: It accounts for about 25% of all calories consumed during the day. It is often a by-product of boredom or lagging energy. It is often void of nutrients. It doesn't allow for your body to rest and digest, diverting energy from your brain and the rest of your body to your digestive system. It reinforces the need for instant gratification and numbs our feelings of true hunger. Here are 5 ways I deal with the urge to snack throughout the day: Drink lots of water. Even better if it has bubbles. :) Get up and move. Sometimes you're just looking for some energy. Doing a mini movement session or walking around the block will help with that. a day in the life of a nutrition coach (and part-time librarian)

I’m always interested in how other people live their day-to-day lives behind the scenes, so I thought I’d share what I do. There’s nothing earth-shattering about it, just a series of small habits strung together throughout the day. Here's what a typical day looks like for me: 5:00 wake up. I get dressed and drink a glass of water while my coffee is brewing.  I like my French press with a little cinnamon, turmeric, black pepper, collagen powder, and a teaspoon of coconut oil. (Cinnamon for blood sugar regulation, turmeric and pepper for inflammation, collagen for my skin, hair, and joints, and coconut oil for my brain.) I drink my coffee while I stretch a little, look at my plan for the day, fill my water bottle, and read for a few minutes. On the weekends, when I have more time, I like to journal and then read for a longer time. Once I get my daughter off to band practice, I go for a run or walk for 30-45 minutes. College move-in day Wow. I look at my Facebook group and blog and realize I’ve been quite the slacker lately. What’s going on? Well let me tell you… Life’s been going on. My oldest went off to college a few weeks ago, and though you might think that would free up more time for me (it technically has) I’ve also been having a hard time sitting still with my feelings or sitting still at all. The realization that my children are leaving the nest and my role as their mother is changing is throwing me for a loop. I’m not quite sure I’m ready for this. What does it mean for the rest of my life? Instead of thinking about that, I’ve been keeping quite busy-- cleaning the house, cleaning out closets, painting her room, planning band events, and planning an Alaska cruise. All things that need to be done eventually, but also things that can be parceled out after I’ve done the things that are really a priority to me, like writing and coaching—and maybe a little introspection. room makeover ...

lessons from band camp

  My husband and I went to band camp last week with our youngest daughter and 160 or so of her closest friends.  We handed out Band-Aids, ice packs, and Tums like there was no tomorrow. We dealt with vomit at 6:00 am (and 11:15 pm), the bloodiest noses I've ever seen, and a rifle butt to the eye. It was intense and unpredictable, and here I am several days later still feeling like I could sleep 10 hours a night. We had a blast, however, and loved seeing how their music progressed throughout the week. At their parent performance on Saturday I got a little teary-eyed, feeling parental towards all 160 of them, and just so darn proud of all the hard work they put into it. So how does one eat low-carb at band camp, you ask?  I gotta admit, it's pretty tough unless you want to bring all your own food.  Here's what I did, as well as some things I should have done better. 1.  I chose my carbs carefully .  At this particular camp they make their own bread, and oh my...

take care of your inner toddler

I am truly like a toddler sometimes. If I can't eat something everyone else is eating, I throw an inner tantrum. (Cheese! I want cheese!) If I don't get enough sleep, I can be quite grumpy.   And if I'm upset, I may just want my binky (in the form of whatever snack is handy--usually mixed nuts or raw almonds). At 52 years old, you would think I'd have that figured out by now, but the hormonal roller coaster ride I'm on right now is actually making it harder.  So what's a girl to do?  Well, remember back to when your kids were toddlers?  What did you do with them?  Do the same thing with your adult self! Make sure you have healthy and easy food choices in the house. Make sure you are drinking enough water. Have a consistent bedtime routine and get enough sleep.  If you can make it work, naps are pretty awesome. Make time for play.  If you want to call it exercise, that works too. what do you do when the shizzle hits the fan?

Ever have one of those days where everything you had planned flew out the window and you became a slave to everyone else’s agenda? Who am I kidding? I have a hunch you all have, and if you have kids, I KNOW you have. This morning I had plans to go on a long, soul-soothing, solo hike. However, when I woke up, my aching hip had other plans. No problem, I thought, I’ll walk to the coffee shop with my husband and get some quality time in with him, while loosening up the hip at the same time. That I did, and then worked on meal planning for the week, baking a birthday cake, and doing some PT for my hip. All well and good, until the shizzle hit the proverbial fan. Suddenly I found myself putting out fires right and left, hunting down a rotten smell from the fridge, calling the dentist for the third time this week to reschedule (yet again), and rushing to the store for last minute groceries, all while trying to plan a birthday get-together.
